Thibaut Courtois is set to make his Real Madrid debut this Wednesday when they take on rivals Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup Final.
The 26-year-old was loaned from Chelsea to Atletico for three seasons in 2011 and during that time he won the Europa League in 2012, the Copa del Rey in 2013 and the La Liga title in 2014.
Some Atletico Madrid fans demonstrated their anger at Courtois’ decision as they were seen vandalising a plaque that commended the goal keeper for his achievements outside the new Wanda Metropolitano stadium over the weekend.
The word ‘rata’ which translates as ‘rat’ covered the plaque and some fans threw beer and even spat at the commemoration before security stepped in.
The rival clubs will meet for the tenth time in a European fixture on Wednesday. Atletico suffered a heartbreaking extra-time defeat to Real in the 2014 Champions League final and lost on penalties in 2016.
