Manchester City vs Shakhtar Donetsk: Champions League match preview, team news, confirmed line-ups, plus more

Manchester City will book their place in the Champions League round-of-16 if they beat Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday evening.

City also need Lyon to beat Hoffenheim in Group F’s other match if they are to make it to the knockout stage on matchday four of their European Cup campaign.

The Etihad hosts Wednesday’s clash

Pep Guardiola’s side secured a 3-0 defeat of their Ukrainian opponents two weeks ago, with Shakhtar currently rooted at the foot of the table with just two points to their name.

What the managers are saying

Pep Guardiola (Man City): “The next game is always the most important and my main concern at the moment is to reach the knockout stage in good condition. If we can win the next two home matches in the Champions League we will be there.”

Paulo Fonseca (Shakhtar Donetsk): “When they have the ball, they keep it exceptionally well. And they have so much quality. If you press them high, they have the quality at the back – including the goalkeeper – to simply pass the ball through your press. Or they can also go long, and in players like [Leroy] Sane and [Raheem] Sterling, they have very fast players. So you have to find another way to defend.”

Team news

The hosts have recalled Ilkay Gundogan, the midfielder, but not defender Nicolas Otamendi for Wednesday’s clash having recovered from injuries. Kevin De Bruyne is back on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Taison misses out for Shakhtar, who could also be without Taras Stepanenko, Marlos and Fernando.

De Bruyne was forced off against Fulham and has been ruled out for six weeks
