Lucas Torreira has sent an emotional message to Sampdoria supporters following his move to Arsenal.

The 22-year-old, who was a fan favourite at Sampdoria, joined the Gunners for a fee of £26.4million on Tuesday to become Unai Emery’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

Arsenal were forced to wait until Uruguay were eliminated from the World Cup before Torreira could undergo a medical but the midfielder is expected to train with his new team-mates next week.

Torreira claimed he was looking forward to his new ‘adventure’ in England and the Uruguayan has now penned a letter to Sampdoria fans to thank them for their support.

‘Goodbye is too strong a word, so I’ll just say “see you later”. I’m doing this because Sampdoria have been my family for two seasons and will stay in my heart forever,’ he said on Instagram.

‘I’m saying ‘see you later’ because, even though I’ll be far away, I’ll never forget the importance of having had you all on my side since my first training session, during which time I wore the most beautiful jersey in the world

‘I’ve grown a lot in these two years, you’ve welcomed me, trusted me and made me feel like one of you. And I’ll stay one of you.

‘Hello, thank you and see you later, Sampdoria. You’ll always have one more fan. A hug, Lucas.’

Arsenal head coach Emery is confident that Torreira will bring ‘great quality’ to his squad at the Emirates.

‘In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game,’ Emery said following the Uruguayan’s unveiling.

‘A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup.

‘He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing.

‘We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season.’
