At the start of the year, Fandango surveyed its vast user base to find out their most anticipated movies of 2016. Unsurprisingly Rogue One: A Star Wars Story took the overall top spot, and as excited as we all are for a new Star Wars, we’ve still got eight months of new movies to get excited about between now and then. And while massive blockbusters are coming out year round these days, the summer is still seen as king of the movie theater. With that in mind, Fandango took a poll confined only to summer releases and the results are basically a “Oh, yeah, I need to add that to my calendar” movie checklist.
Most Anticipated Summer Action Movie:
1. Captain America: Civil War (May 6)
2. Independence Day: Resurgence (June 24)
3. Jason Bourne (July 29)
4. X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27)
5. Suicide Squad (August 5)
Captain America: Civil War taking the top spot is no great shocker, but what may surprise some people is that Fandango is also reporting the movie is currently selling more advance tickets than every single previous Marvel movie. It’s even more hotly anticipated than the first Avengers, which is certainly saying something.
Also interesting is Jason Bourne ranking higher than two superhero movies. That may seem odd considering superheroes seem to rule all these days, but keep in mind that it’s been nearly a decade since we’ve seen Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne. Apparently audiences are still very hungry for more of the roof-jumping, throat-chopping spy on the run– especially since this poll was conducted before the new trailer for Jason Bourne went online earlier today.
Most Anticipated Family Film of the Summer:
1. Finding Dory (June 17)
2. The Secret Life of Pets (July 8)
3. Alice Through the Looking Glass (May 27)
4. Ice Age: Collision Course (July 22)
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (June 3)
Finding Dory was Fandango’s second most anticipated movie of 2016, so it certainly makes sense that it’s on top in this category. It’s also particularly nice to see that an original movie, The Secret Life of Pets, has ranked so high in a list that’s otherwise sequels to hit movies. Apparently the world has a little bit of an obsession with pets. Who knew?
Most Anticipated Summer Comedy:
1. Ghostbusters (July 15)
2. Central Intelligence (June 17)
3. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (May 20)
4. The Nice Guys (May 20)
5. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (July 8)
Melissa McCarthy was named Most Anticipated Actress in Fandango’s 2016 poll, so obviously that’s carrying through in this comedy category. In a lot of ways, Ghostbusters seems like the biggest wild card movie of the summer. There is a trailer out already, but the studio has been playing things pretty close to the chest, so people simply do not know quite what to expect out of what is easily the most scrutinized remake of 2016. Thankfully we’re now a little less than three months away from being able to see what McCarthy and her team have in store.
But wait, that’s not all!
Fandango Movieclips also cut together this sweet trailer for the summer that mashes together not just the movies on the lists above, but plenty more. Check it out.
