‘I’m not in charge of the market’ – Maurizio Sarri unsure on Willian’s Chelsea future after Brazilian scores winner against Newcastle

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri said he wants Willian to stay at the club amid reports Barcelona want to sign the Brazilian in January.

However, Sarri admitted he could not give a definitive answer on the player’s future, saying: “I’m not in charge of the market.”

Willian celebrates his winning goal against Newcastle

A day after calling on the 30-year-old to improve, Willian scored the winning goal in Chelsea’s narrow victory over Newcastle on Saturday with a beautiful curling effort in the second-half.

The victory sees the Blues tighten their grip on fourth spot, going six points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal and just a point behind third-placed Tottenham.

And although things are going relatively smoothly on the pitch, off it, the scenes are very busy at Stamford Bridge.

They completed the signing of Christian Pulisic – a deal Sarri claimed to have no knowledge of before it was announced publicly – while Cesc Fabregas secured his move to Monaco on Friday.

Sarri has made no secret about his lack of involvement in Chelsea’s transfer dealings

The futures of Alvaro Morata, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Willian are yet to be resolved either.

When asked about Willian’s situation after the match, the Italian said: “I’m not able to understand the market because I’m not in charge of the market.

“Of course, I can only tell you my opinion. My opinion is Willian is a very important player for us.“So, I would prefer him to stay here with us.

“You know the qualities of Willian very well and the goal is a part of his qualities.”
