Knowledge Management

What is knowledge management?

This question is very subjective and has to be answered in perspective because Knowledge Management (KM) means different things to different stakeholders.

I’ll try to define KM from various perspectives;

In the section knowledge management, Microsoft Encarta encyclopaedia defines KM the organization of intellectual resources and information systems within an organisation. An information system is the interaction between people, processes, data and technology.

The businessdictionary.com defines knowledge management as “strategies and processes designed to identify, capture, structure, value, leverage, and share an organization’s intellectual assets to enhance its performance and competitiveness.”

Buzzwhack.com suggests that KM is an organization’s ability to “manage” its “knowledge.” This is achieved by feeding as much company information into a database (or databases) and developing a system that keeps track of it all and in turn, this allows stakeholders in the organization to take advantage of the collective knowledge to make company more profitable.

From the definitions above, it can be perceived that, KM are the strategies and/or methods an organisation uses to manage and processes it’s pool of individual and collective knowledge to distinguish itself from competitors. Read the rest of this entry »

Here i am, once again!

Hi people,

Let me start by saying Happy 2010 to everyone. I wishing you all a wonderful, eventful and successful year ahead.

I have had this blog for over a year now but have not been utilizing it optimally, i tried to create links like “Did you know?”,”Once upon a time” and “Rhema” to help me create fresh content, however, i have been engrossed with part-time work and school work and now the contents are getting stale.

Good news! i am taking a module this term called “Knowledge Management Strategies”. Its is being taught by Mr Moteleb.. The first lecture was very exciting, although it going to be a lot of work - i know i’ll be OK. We are all required to create a blog, do research and post them. The module is taught in an unconventional but interesting way, it works based on that Chinese proverb that says:- “Give a man fish and you feed him once, teach him how to fish and you feed him for life”

Teach a man how to fish

I’m really looking forward to the module,  because i know i’ll learn a lot and i hope to share it with the world. So check back regularly to check out my posts and please feel free to register and add comments.
